Originally the company concentrated upon nutrition, veterinary
and biochemical research. An expansion of services in the late '50s led to the
assessment of pharmaceuticals, crop protection products, food additives and
a whole variety of industrial and consumer chemicals. This set the company on
its present path to become a leading provider of safety assessment services.
In the early '60s Government legislation began to impact more
heavily on manufacturers, particularly those in the pharmaceutical industry.
The public and legislators became aware of the potential damage, as well as
the benefits that could accrue from chemicals and drugs. Huntingdon was well
positioned to take advantage of this opportunity in these early years of toxicology
and it helped to shape the safety testing industry as we know it today.
