Genetically Modified Foods

Modern plant biotechnology can offer a way to quickly improve crop characteristics such as yield, pest resistance or herbicide tolerance, often to a degree not possible with traditional breeding methods. The new varieties are intended to be identical to the original organism apart from the new traits. The safety assessment is based upon an evaluation of the similarity to the traditional variety.

The services we offer include:

Toxicology Studies

Basic

  • Ames test
  • Mammalian cell mutation
  • Micronucleus test
  • Acute oral toxicity
  • 90-day feeding study

Enhanced (depending upon degree and extent of human exposure)

  • Chronic toxicity
  • Carcinogenicity
  • Reproductive toxicity

Allergenicity

To evaluate the potential for allergenicity of the novel expressed protein, a weight-of-evidence approach is taken. Physico-chemical aspects, including heat stability, comparisons with known allergens, a history of allergenicity of the donor or recipient organisms and degradability in the GI tract are the main considerations.

  • Protein digestion
  • Oral allergenicity, measurement of total IgE.

Livestock feeding studies

  • Safety and tolerance tests in target livestock species, for potential allergenicity, intolerance and wholesomeness of the final product
  • Aquatic
  • Avian
  • Ruminant

Plant metabolism

  • Confirmation that the metabolism of pesticides is unchanged by the genetic modification

Microbial test

  • Transfer of antibiotic resistance markers
  • Potential infectivity of viral vectors
