Chemicals are involved in many of the products we take for granted, from clothing
and consumer goods, to pest control, to crop protection, to oils and fuels through
to pharmaceuticals.
As you can see therefore, most chemicals are involved in activities to our
benefit and can be made and used without harm. However, they can also have unintended
harmful effects on people (workers, consumers, etc), animals and on the environment.
A variety of legislation seeks to ensure that these possible harmful effects
are avoided. In the EU this legislation is commonly known as NONS (Notification
of New Substances).
The NONS testing structure is designed to identify possible risks posed to
people, animals and the environment from placing new substances on the market.
It does so by obtaining information about these new substances in a systematic
way so that users may be made aware of the dangers and if necessary, recommendations
for control can be made.
Huntingdon Life Sciences was involved in the submission of the first of these
notifications in the EU. We have submitted dossiers under most of the world’s
notification schemes, including those covering:
- EU
- USA
- Japan
- Switzerland
- Canada
- Australia
- Korea
- China
- Philippines
