Biocidal products are designed to control harmful organisms by either chemical
or biological means. But what exactly is a biocide? They come in many forms
and some may be immediately obvious, gardeners will recognise wood preservatives.
Others may more be more unusual, antifouling products and embalming and taxidermy
fluids to name a few!
However, the one thing they all have in common with each other is that they
will, at some point in their use, come into contact with humans, animals and/or
the environment.
In the EU, the Biocidal Product Directive (BPD) regulates 23 biocidal product
types and divides them into four main groups:
- Disinfectants
- Preservatives
- Pest control
- Other biocidal products (e.g., preservatives for food and feedstocks; other
vertebrate controls)
Huntingdon Life Sciences have successfully prepared and submitted 4 complete
reviews for actives and products (this covered Wood Preservatives and Rodenticides)
and over 35 Notification dossiers under the BPD 1st Review Regulation No. 1896/2000.
We are currently working on the complete reviews of priority product type
biocides and are undertaking preliminary risk assessments and project planning
for actives to be included in the second, third and fourth priority lists.
We can offer a full testing service, including:
- Toxicology
- Inhalation toxicology
- Reproductive toxicology
- Metabolism and environmental fate
- Ecotoxicology
- Physicochemical properties
Our regulatory team is experienced in negotiating with regulators. In addition
they offer:
- Expert regulatory advice
- Review of existing data for adequacy
- Identification of data gaps
- Advice on surrogate data
