Animal Welfare

We live in remarkable times. Many of us experience a standard of living and healthcare that would be inconceivable to our great grandparents. Moreover we enjoy and expect the right to high standards of quality and safety in the products we use.

But this level of expectation demands a high level of safety assessment, particularly when it concerns products with the potential to cause personal harm or injury. On a daily basis we have contact with an astonishing variety of such substances, for example:

  • Medicines
  • Food additives
  • Food packaging
  • Adhesives
  • Clothes dyes
  • Veterinary products

As consumers we strive for a 'no-risk' guarantee. In response, government regulatory bodies insist upon stringent and comprehensive safety testing for these products, including testing on animals. Huntingdon Life Sciences provides this essential service for a wide variety of customers including governmental agencies.

It is our job to ensure that these tests are performed to strict scientific criteria, provide reliable results that can be reproduced, and with leading standards of animal care and welfare.

This places an important burden of responsibility upon us, one which we do not take lightly. We have to respect the needs of the animals and be fully aware of the welfare issues involved. We are committed to providing the highest levels of animal husbandry and welfare.

In May 2003 Huntingdon Life sciences was awarded an Achievement of Accreditation by the Association For Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, AAALAC (aaalac.org). We are one of only a few Contract Research Organisations in the world to be accredited.
